Hello, I'm Kelly Jennings, but my colleagues and clients know me as "Coach Kelly."
Believe it or not, we share more similarities than you might think. Let me paint you a picture of my journey.
A long time ago, in a universe far, far away, I took a leap into the world of acting, improvisation, directing, and theatrical production, steering away from the family business. Little did I know, a career in performance is the epitome of being a "business owner."
Daily, I managed my own business, creating trackers for auditions, staying connected with industry professionals, and personally handling marketing efforts. I even went on sales calls to pitch theaters and forge partnerships for new projects. It's a lot like running a business, isn't it? Show BUSINESS, to be exact.
Then came a day a friend and I co-founded a theater, running it successfully for five years. Budgeting, tight deadlines, promotions, and crucial conversations became second nature. Wearing all hats, from executive to janitorial, wasn't exactly in the acting school curriculum.
As Co-Artistic Director for Philadelphia's longest-running comedy improv theater, my co-directors and I integrated improv principles into our leadership. The results were phenomenal: increased sales, doubled audience size, and improv artists receiving cash bonuses - a rarity in the industry.
Theater and improv taught me about leadership—defining success, holding a bold vision, using systems and strategy, and embracing accountability. Leadership demands people skills, a trusted advisor, and a commitment to regular practice. It's about making others shine, not just giving orders. Leadership is service, connection, collaboration.
The skills honed to fill theaters, produce and manage projects, and deliver stellar performances are the same skills needed to excel in any business. For over 20 years, I've facilitated and designed interactive team building and customer service training, personally coaching executives and small business owners. The outcome? Increased sales, confidence in high-value conversations, motivated teams, enhanced productivity, and overall organizational happiness.
